Do any of these terms sound familiar to you: on-call shifts, picket duty, call-out shifts, binding, standby shifts, pager shifts? Most organisations have to deal with some form of on-call shift work.
On-call shift work is the official term used in the Working Hours Act. This is when an employee has to be available on-call in order to carry out any incidental work that needs to be carried out immediately. The Working Hours Act contains very specific rules about on-call shift work. Many organisations break these rules without even knowing it.
